Travel Support

The Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) of the American Physical Society (APS) together with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy) wish to promote the subject of fluid dynamics and help those who find the financial burden of attending the DFD annual meeting difficult.  Especially targeted are young scientists and those not otherwise able to attend.  Toward this end, supplemental travel support for around 10 researchers from developed countries (U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Russia and Japan) at the $500 support level, and 10 researchers from developing and underdeveloped countries at the $1000 support level will likely be available.

Application Deadline: August 5, 2005

Visa Requests

Attendees from Western Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and Singapore do not need a visa to attend the APS/DFD 2005 Meeting.  All other attendees need a B-1 visa for business travel to enter the United States.

If you require a visa for travel to the United States, you need to apply for a visa with the U.S. embassy (consular division) or consulate with ample time for processing. The conference organizers strongly urge you to request a letter of invitation no later than early July, 2005.  To avoid bureaucratic problems, you should submit your formal application to U.S. authorities a minimum of 120 days in advance of the date of anticipated travel.

To request a letter of invitation from the chair of the 2005 DFD meeting, Richard M. Lueptow, contact:

Letters of invitation can only be faxed or mailed.  Be sure to provide your fax number and complete mailing address in your request for a letter of invitation.  Those requesting expedited service (DHL, Federal Express, etc.) must provide an account number for that purpose.

As you prepare for your trip, the US Visa web site (Destination USA: US Department of State) has important information on obtaining US visas to help you plan for traveling to the United States.  Click on the "Learn more >>" button for "Doing Business and Working in the U.S." for information about B-1 visas.

A complete list of countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program (and do not need a visa for travel to the US) can be found at the US Department of State Visa Waiver Program web site (http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html ).
