The Balogun Research Group is focused on design of novel multifunctional materials and structures to enable control of elastic/acoustic and electromagnetic waves in materials. In particular, we are interested in basic research to understand the physics of wave propagation in 2D and 3D nano- and microscale periodic materials. We are also interested in developing novel experimental tools with high spatial and temporal resolution for visualization and measurement of acoustic and light wave propagation in materials. We hope to leverage basic research in these areas to realize new engineering approaches, to sound/heat insulation, multifunctional sensors, actuators, and elastic/acoustic and super-resolution imaging. The Balogun Research Group is also interested in applications of laser material interaction, to studying the dynamic interfacial properties of soft and hard thin films, nondestructive sensing and metrology of additive manufacturing parts, and mechanical characterization using laser generated elastic stress waves.
